In Honor of The Great Backyard Bird Count

I posted this on Facebook yesterday, but since the Great Backyard Bird Count is coming up in February, I thought I would share these two photos with you.  There was a car accident in our neighborhood and a tree was scorched.  For some reason I am drawn to this tree everytime we drive by.  Well, yesterday we saw a Barred Owl.  He blends into the background really well.

Do you see him???

Look at the close up.....

Don't forget to mark your calendars for the GBBC!

  1. Wow! Talk about blending in Janet. I couldn't find it in the first photo until I looked at the second one. It looks like the tree bark has eyes. LOL!
Wishing you a Wonderful Christmas in your new home.

  3. I would post these shots over and over Janet ~ they are such an exceptional sighting and handsome owl. I'm even going to direct my parents over here to take a look at him!!
I hope to participate in the GBBC again this year as well. Maybe you'll have the good fortune of adding this owl to your list on that day too?

  4. I would love to see it in person! Awesome sight and thanks for sharing on here too. I can see him in the first picture when I look close. I wish I could see one here-I hear them all the time so know they are here. It's such a beautiful sight.

  6. Janet,

Most of the time we could walk right under one of these owls and never know it unless it flies away. I love when they get wild and crazy with their "who cooks for you" calls .

  8. He really does blend in! Good sighting. Barred Owls are beautiful birds. They live on our farm but we don't often see them close up, although we hear them all the time.

  9. Great capture, Janet! I hear the owls hooting at night around here, but I've yet to see one in the daytime. I participated for the first time last year in the GBBC; it was a lot of fun and plan to do it again this year.

  10. Wow! Nature is amazing. I took a bit to see it.
I understand why you feel so attracted to that tree it does have a very nice feeling contrasting so much with the rest

  13. Oh, my kids would be SO excited to see an owl out in the wild. We saw some bald eagles and their nests while driving through northern Idaho during Thanksgiving weekend. These great birds are fascinating.
