Since today is the 15th, the garden bloggers have Garden Blogger's Bloom Day. This is hosted by Carol over at May Dreams Garden I am late in getting my blooms posted today. I am number 83! If you want to see what blooming around the world today.. go check out her post.
As you can see, my garden is starting to fill in. I have a lot of Sedum sarmentosum, otherwise called Stringy stonecrop. It fills in the bare spots and I treat it like a weedy groundcover. As the season continues it will get brighter yellow. The bermuda is starting to get a bit greener. I love a bermuda lawn in the winter, you can tell where the weeds are!! The Alyssum saxatile 'Golden Flourish' is just starting to bloom and the Wallflower Erysimum species is getting brighter and fuller yellow every day. The Isla Gold Tansy is turning yellower as the season progresses as well. Yellow Pansies round out the front yellow area.
Alyssum saxatile-
Jane is still blooming. This Magnolia will continue to bloom off and on through out the spring and a little in the early summer. What a gal!!
The portion of the lilac bush, Syringa vulgaris, that the vole didn't eat is now blooming. It has not been a consistent bloomer...perhaps the threat of death caused her to put forth more blooms!
The Wallflower getting taller every day!
I have a variegated ground cover in a pot that can be invasive-- so in the pot he will stay. I didn't know he had a bloom. Glechoma hederacea "Variegated Ground Ivy" is in a container with three Gaura.
Here is this year's photo of my header bloom...an unknown as yet Narcissus. I have sent the photo to Brent and Becky and asked for a name. Will keep you updated.
And my last one for today will be the Christmas cactus that is blooming in my dining room. Since these Schlumbergera Bridgesii are photo sensitive and need specific light and dark periods to bloom, I think this one is a little mixed up since it has been in the dining room all the time. It is pretty though........ Happy Bloom Day!!!
Your lilacs are out already!?!? I'm totally jealous.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to go check my lilac (since we've been indoors for days due to rain) to see if it is blooming.
ReplyDeleteYou've got some great blooms already. I just seem to have a lot of buds right now.
Cameron
Okay, this one's easy! I love the Lilac! Too bad we can't smell through the computer! You tell that darn vole to move out :)
ReplyDeleteI can smell those sweet lilacs from here! What a gorgeous and delicate shade they are. Everything in your garden looks like its thriving. :)
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful Janet. I love, love, love the long picture of your side garden there near the house. It is gorgeous. Great bones and a good curve in it. I hope you get your mystery flower identified. It is sweet and so you. Make sure you dig them to take with you when you move. Have a good day!
ReplyDeleteAoF- Yes, but you have a Juddii, equally wonderfully fragrant!
ReplyDeleteCameron- I was surprised the lilac bloomed at all this year. The other flowers- some have been blooming for quite a while and others just like popcorn...pop pop pop and the garden is full of blooms.
Tessa- I would love to tell the vole to move out. I ws going through my labels in the garage to get the name of one for today... it is so sad to see all the labels whose plants have disappeared because of the vole.
Nancy- Thanks, I love lilacs and would love to have more...whatever color they were! In my garden it either thrives or dies, no middle ground!
Tina- You are too kind. Thanks for the comment on the garden... I really like the ability to look out the front door and see a lot of the garden. Just wait til it all fills in. Looks like a jungle of color. Will have to get back to Brent and Becky with new photos and see if they can ID the Daffodil. (I know it came from them)
Janet...the white flower with pink undertones is wonderful! I can't believe it's a Christmas Cactus...I love it! It makes the red and pink ones look gaudy! I was struck by the lovely curved bed...you have a great design sense! It all looks great together~~Happy Bloom Day~~gail
ReplyDeleteGail- we must have been writing at the same time!! Thanks, I really like the curved garden. We had big pine trees right next to the house when we first moved here. Luckily they were removed the day before the hurricane...they would have come down on the house.
ReplyDeleteI am really tickled with the Christmas cactus photo. The pale pink is so delicate.
I love the curve of your garden too Janet. I find curves are more forgiving than straight lines in the garden. Plus they are easier to mow around. ;) You have alot of beautiful yellow blooms in your garden right now. Your Lilac is a trouper after getting munched on by that vole. I bet it smells heavenly.
ReplyDeleteNice. We have a volunteer lilac from our neighbor. It's still small, but someday.......
ReplyDeleteI love the shape of your border, don't you just love seeing all those fresh clumps of new growth coming up and filling in? 'Jane' sure is pretty, I had no idea it bloomed that long. We used to call glechoma "creeping charlie" when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteRacquel- thanks, curved beds are easier to keep. My husband said he liked my bones and curves as well....didn't know he was into garden design! ;-)
ReplyDeleteK&V- I love volunteer plants...if they mind their manners. Hope your lilac blooms for you soon.
Catherine- thanks, I like the curved lines as well... creeping charlie eh? good name for it. And yes, Jane is a great bloomer.
Hi Janet~~ You garden is beautiful--good bones. You must post photographs as the season progresses. I could almost smell the lilac and the Eyrisium is so bright and cheery. Love it.
ReplyDeleteGood morning Grace- I will be sharing the front garden throughout the season. Last year I had salvia 'Victoria Blue' that got too spire-y in the front. We shall see how rearranging things looks this year.
ReplyDeleteHappy bloom day to you! That photo of the Christmas cactus really looks so elegant. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks Town Mouse for visiting. I was really surprised when I downloaded the pictures and saw how cool the Christmas cactus looked.
ReplyDeleteYes, your garden is coming in nicely. I love the wallflower and had both yellow and Mauve Bowles at my former home. I did not know the yellow would grow to look so grand.
ReplyDeleteYour bed is laid out well. That looks like rich dirt and lots of good mulch. Only us obsessed folks notice that sort of thing.
Hi Janet, all so lovely. I used to have the yellow alyssum at my PA house, it was so cheering in early spring. I rarely if ever see it for sale here for some reason. The wallflower looks to upright and healthy too, as do the eaten lilacs. We have a severe vole problem behind the block walls, but the lilac is far away from there up behind the knot garden at the top of the property. Why can't the cats take care of those varmints!
ReplyDeleteFrances
Anna- thanks, I really need to mulch that bed again. Some of the mulch is still there, but lot needs to be refreshed. Iam really impressed with the Wallflower. Will look into other colors.
ReplyDeleteFrances- I had not heard of this type of Alyssum before I bought a "Color Bowl" on the discount table at the nursery. I was able to get about 4 or 5 perennials out of it and the Alyssum and Wallflower have been outperforming many other plants in the spring bed. Voles...man! What an aggravation.
I like the rain drops on your Jane. It is taking me a while to complete my GBBD rounds. I visited a couple the day of, but time is precious at this season. My son and I are headed your direction today as we are canoeing at York River State Park. Look for a future post if the camera does not get wet.
ReplyDeleteLes, Thanks, the raindrops were pretty constant for a few days...hard to avoid. You and your son have a gorgeous day to go to York River State Park. I have to back to the Learning Garden with new batteries in the camera as there are so many things blooming. Great day to be outside! I look forward to seeing what you capture with the camera at the park.
