Duck!

For the last week or so we have had about 6 Mallards swimming up and down the creek. While these ducks are not unusual ducks, we haven't had many in recent years. A number of years ago there was some kind of virus that killed off a large bit of the population. Our creek opens to the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Poquoson River. Everyone I spoke with who lives down creek was mentioning the same thing, no ducks. I am happy to see them back again.

Here is what we used to experience.

  2. I did not know about that virus Janet. I'm glad they are making a comeback. The thing we see the most of here are Canadian geese ~ they are everywhere.

  3. I am such a fan of Mallards. The ponds around our neighborhood have the ducks visiting now and then. I miss them when they are gone. I have tendency to talk "baby-talk" when I see ducks. Not sure why.
I loved that photo, it was cute!

  4. Wow! You used to have so many! I am glad you have had some return. I love mallards too. I used to have a 'pet' mallard when I was growing up.

  5. Our kids always loved feeding the ducks and it was so funny when a huge Canadian goose would approach and give them a fright.

  8. Aw sweet! Those must be the two college girls (now graduated if I remember correctly?) This is a great way for them to look back anytime they wish.

  9. That's a shame about the virus. I grew up on a big lake with 40-50 year-round resident mallards and I used to love feeding them and seeing them fly around.

  10. I am glad your ducks are back, but I wish there was a virus for Canadian geese - or at least some form of birth control.

  11. Precious, Janet! I think sometimes nature has a way of culling the overly populated. As much as we hate to see them suffer, the strong survive and carry on. [Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.]

  13. Hi Jan, thanks and yes we are glad to see the ducks returning.

Hi Colleen, thanks, it is one of our favorites!

Hi Kathleen, we have some Cananda Geese here as well. It is always surprising to see how large they are.

Hi Rosey, baby talk eh? Cute, well, ducks are fun. Glad you liked the photo.

HI Noelle, we had dozens and dozens years ago. A pet Mallard, fun!

Hi Donna, thanks for stopping by. Kids and ducks-- great combo.

Hi DP, glad it dragged you in! It is a photo I was very happy to be able to scan and hooray for the ducks!

Hi K, yes, our little angles.

Hi Tina, yes- these are my college grads as little girls (one of them is now using this picture for her facebook profile picture)

Hi Sweetbay, I don't remember what the virus was, but the ducks seem to be making a return, so we are happy.

Hi Les, I see your fondness for Cananda geese is strong.

Hi Grace, thanks! It could be nature's way to control population, not sure.

Hi Gail, they loved feeding the ducks and the ducks knew where the feed was stored in the garage -- would show you the way...get more food!!

  16. We have many quakers which live here year round, many people like them and others say there are too many. I am sure we would all be concerned if they started to disappear.
