Window Views and Ants

It is fall and the colors are outstanding.  I love the views from our dining room window.  We live in an Oak-Hickory forest and in the fall the view just sparkles.   This is the view of the lot next door to us.  This summer I saw a deer walking down through the woods, heading to the lake for a drink.  The bird activity is just wonderful.  (Except for Great Backyard Bird Count day when they all hide)

The late afternoon sunlight shines through the forest, love the angle of the sun this time of year.   On the windowsill you see a pair of binoculars....they are well used!!

Gardening is usually nicer in the fall here in South Carolina because the weather is better.  Unfortunately for me, I found a nest of fire ants.  We planted a new bed at the front gate of our housing area.  Moving a little bit of mulch the next day to cover a bare spot of soil, I picked up a handful of ants.  Note to self --wear your gloves and look before you pick up anything!!!

We made a trip to the doctor and I have meds to take care of getting my hand back to normal.  Will have to wait a few more days to get back into my garden, don't want the blistered bites to pop and get worse.
The tree post from last week will be up probably tomorrow.  Benedryl makes my head a little fuzzy so I haven't finished writing it.   Be sure to check previous tree posts as fall pictures are added.

  2. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. I got a bite or two, living in Mobile for 6 years, but never an entire cluster like that. Just the few I got were painful enough. Take good care of yourself.

It took me several years to quit automatically checking the ground I was standing on after moving out of fire ant country. Luckily it's a habit I seem to easily resume when I head south to visit our daughter in the Florida panhandle.

By the way, I love the view out your dining room window!

  3. What a spectacular view out your dining room window! I'm so glad to see someone else who eschews curtains and blinds in favor of a good view of the garden. Glad to hear you got some meds from the doctor. Sounds like he didn't think the swelling and redness was a sign of infection.

  4. That is a true Picture Window you have there! I have binoculars in 3 different spots throughout our house for quick peeks into the woods. Your bites are really bad girl. I had this happen to me once while in Texas. I unknownly ran the mower over a hill and was attacked on my ankle. The Ankle swell to the point I could not wear my shoe for two days! I assume the ant ventom was spread throughout and my body adjusted to it as I have never had another reaction such as that one. Now a bite just comes to a white head, it pops with a scratch and I itch for a few days. Nothing more... Just an aggrivation for me now... Hope you heal soon...

  5. Widok z okna jest cudowny. Ja raczej nie ubieram rękawic przy pracy w ogrodzie, ale teraz widzę, ze to jest konieczne. Mam nadzieję, że ręka już mnie boli. Pozdrawiam.
The view from the windows is wonderful. I'd rather not wear gloves when working in the garden, but now I see that this is necessary. I hope that the hand already hurts. Yours.

  6. What a pretty view out your window Janet. Oh you poor girl. T Hose nasty old fire ants. I am glad they are not here in Ohio. When I was on vacation in Florida one year they had me ate up and festered sores all over my legs. That was my first experience with them and I do not like them a all. LOL! Have a great week.

  7. uh - the itching can drive you crazy! next time mix up one part bleach to nine parts water. it is said to speed healing and help with the itching. when i was little and we used to get into ticks or chiggers, mama would toss a cup of bleach in the tub with us. we came out as white as ghosts but no itching.

  10. Fire ants are one thing I don't miss about SC. I was always worried my kids would step on them when they were little. I hope you feel better soon. Love your window view!

  11. Poor you! Do the bites itch or burn or sting? They look like they might do all three. I hope the bites heal soon! Your window looks like a painting hanging on the wall.

  13. That view is bound to make your recovery period fly by, until you can (carefully) get back out there.

  14. We have terrible fire ants here, too. I've had one or two bites, but never a handful like that. Hope the meds work and you are well soon.
    Lovely view of the woods!

  18. Owy! I remember those days of fire ants well. They can be very dangerous so I hope your hand heals well. Beautiful view. I like the window with no curtains too. That's my fav way of styling in my house as I wish to see to the outside unobstructed.

  19. OUCH! That looks absolutely nasty, must hurt something awful. I know what you mean about benadryl - maybe pull up a seat by that wonderful window and spend a little time just gazing. It's quite the view.

  20. Oh.. the blisters must hurt badly. Ants are something we are quite used too here. They hit the leg first as we walk in the garden.......

  21. Well you're right, that view looks like a poster or something - so pretty!
And yikes! Take care of those bites.

  22. Your windows are like framed pictures, only the image changes. Sorry about the ants, I have been there too, but the results seemed to be less severe.

  23. omg, Janet ~ take care of your hand! That is a major reaction. I've learned to wear gloves doing fall & spring clean up after picking up a yellow jacket one year (in the leaves). Not fun. Your picture window is wonderful. I believe you about how many birds you have because of all the wonderful photos you've shared. Your barred owl photo is still one of my favorites.

  24. I hope by now your hand is much better. Geez how awful. I always think of fire ants as being way further south and west than where you live. Do take care. The view out your window is gorgeous. I would sit there often with my bins too if I lived there. :)

  25. Now that's what I call a picture window, Janet! Such a lovely and serene view. Hope you hand is better by now.

  26. Janet, if I had that view, I would never get anything done. It's just lovely! I hope your hand is feeling much better.

  27. Ouch! :( I feel your pain. I've been bitten by fire ants many many times and hate them so much. Putting the bite under running cold water right away helps. I usually have to use steroid cream too.

I'm envious of your hickory trees. Wonderful view from that picture window!
