A Treat in the New Year

Every winter I marvel at the Paperwhites that bloom through December and January.

  1. What a beautiful photo! I like how you used a black background that really highlights their beauty.

  2. They are pretty Janet but your photo is beautiful of them.
I hope you and your family have the best new year possible.
It has been such a pleasure getting to know you since I started blogging and I hope to keep reading more great posts!

  3. Funny you should post these. I just cut all the ones blooming in my yard to bring in prior to the forecasted deep freeze. Do you belong to the "like the smell" camp or "don't like the smell"?

  4. I love paperwhites too. Happy New Year!

  5. They sure look lovely in your photo! I couldn't help but cringe at the recent memory of seeing some in bloom at a store, and putting my nose right on them to take a big sniff. Oh my, I am in the "don't like the smell" camp!

    Happy New Year!

  6. What a pretty picture Janet. I love the blooms on them but I am one who cannot stand them indoors. My son said to get rid of them.LOL! It is a shame that I do not like them indoors because they add blooms to a winter.

  9. A true treat, Janet, thanks! They look like sugar candy creations, too perfect to be real. I am on the fence about the fragrance, it can be overwhelming in a small enclosed space.

  12. We have an on going battle, my husband hates the smell of these, and I love them. So I just grow amaryllis, but I miss the wonderful aroma of paperwhites! Your photo is just lovely!

  13. A stunning photo!

I am also one who can't have these beauties indoors as they really make me sneeze. I have to wait for outdoor daffs and such.

  15. I actually like small doses of the smell but they can get a little overpowering after a while. They sure do look beautiful this time of year.

    Happy New Year to you.

  17. Janet,
And, even if it's frigid now for us, warmer spells and daffodils, not to mention other early bloomers, are not too far off!

  18. So lovely, Janet! They really do brighten up these cold, gloomy days. I really wish I had planted some of these this fall. But I am eagerly anticipating my first amaryllis bloom any day now.

  20. Hi everyone! Thanks so much for the comments...seems like the camps are evenly divided with the 'fragrance' of paperwhites. I don't mind it one way or the other.

Noelle, thanks! Still learning to use the new camera...will be in learning mode for a long time I think. The reason it is black is that the flash went off.

RainGardener, appreciate it! I have enjoyed getting to know you as well. Here is to a grand new year!

Les, I think I am in the middle, I don't notice the 'smell'. Have been surprised when folks mention it.

Sweetbay, Happy New Year to you as well.

Sue, Sorry to hear about the store sniff...kind of funny, now, after the fact. Happy New Year to you.

Lona, thanks, These are pretty scraggly ones...were inside years ago and planted in the spring. Now, geraniums (pelagorium) are HORRIBLE in my mind!

Victoria, they sure do photograph well! Glad you like their scent.

    Phillip, ok then.

Frances, learning to do macro shots and trying not to have the flash go off....new equipment!

    Tina, thanks.

    Deborah, thanks.

Bangchik, pure white flowers are certainly striking aren't they?

Lucy, glad I could introduce you to a new plant. Happy New Year to you.

Rosey, sorry for the dischord in your family harmony of plant material. think this should have been a pre-marital issue? ;-)

Cameron, thanks. I look forward to the daffodils coming in too!

Chris, yes they are great this time of year. Happy New Year to you too.

Pam, well, thanks for visiting and please come back.

Lisa, I am looking forward to warmer weather, that means it is closer to our moving to SC!

Rose, yes they do brighten up the day. How exciting to have your Amaryllis blooming!

Randy, well, now you know she likes them....how many are you going to plant?

  22. Very pretty! This is my first visit to your blog and I'm glad I did! We used to live in Alexandria, VA and I taught in Fairfax. Those were the D.C. days and now we are in Austin. Enjoyed your blog.

  23. They are lovely... and you captured their sparkle :)

  24. Happy New Year! Beautiful white flower for winter. Love the pics of the German ornaments as I know them well from living in Germany for 6 years! I collected many ornaments at the Christkindlmarkts and they are so fragile aren’t they? Love the doggies under the Christmas tree. Animals bring a tree a live in my book...

  25. Hi Amy, thanks for visiting, hope you come back again. I went to high school in Fairfax (about 100 years ago) and enjoyed our time in Texas (we were in Killeen)

Hi Meredith, welcome! thanks so much.

Hi Skeeter, I really miss the Christkindlmarkts! Yes, those ornaments are very fragile. have lost a few over the years.

  26. I so agree these bulbs are perfect for growing this time of year Janet! Your photo is beautiful. I have some blooming now too but I don't think they'll stick around ~ the smell is starting to get to me!

btw, thank you so much for offering your old calendars to me (for my card making projects) I better not accept tho ~ I have a pretty big stack already. It was very generous of you tho. :-)
